• The first officially sponsored Komen North Colorado Race for the Cure® was run on July 4, 1998.

• The Komen North Colorado Race for the Cure® now supports breast cancer education in northeastern Colorado. This includes Weld, Morgan, Logan, Washington and Sedgwick counties in northeastern Colorado.

• Annually, the Race precedes the Greeley Independence Stampede parade through the streets of Greeley, Colorado. By the end of the Race, there are in excess of 40,000 people lining 10th Avenue encouraging the runners and walkers.

• Nearly 250 local volunteers help to organize the Race.

• 1998 saw over 800 runners and walkers. In 2006 over 1,800 runners and walkers participated.

• Proceeds from the Race equaled nearly $50,000. Of that, 75% remains in northern Colorado. These funds are used to help with breast health education, screenings and treatment for the medically underserved.

• 25% of the proceeds is contributed to The Susan G.Komen Breast Cancer Foundation National Grant Program to fund breast cancer research across the United States.

The Foundation

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. From its inception through the end of the fiscal year 1998, the Foundation has raised $300 million for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.

The Foundation has more than 40,000 volunteers working through a network of U.S. and international Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure® events to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. The Foundation runs one of the most innovative, responsive grant programs in breast cancer today, having awarded more than $47 million in research grants since its inception.

In addition to funding research, the Foundation and its Affiliates fund non-duplicative, community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved.

Innovative research projects funded internationally by the Komen Foundation include:
• Dissertation grants for doctoral candidates in the health and social sciences to conduct
breast health or breast cancer research;
• Postdoctoral fellowships to recruit and retain young scientists in the field of breast
cancer research;
• Basic, clinical and transitional breast cancer research;
• Imaging technology research to develop and improve breast cancer screening methods
for early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer;
• Research to address the unique needs of breast cancer survivors; and
• Epidemiological research to address the disparities that exist in breast cancer
incidence and mortality rates among specific populations.
